Metalwork Instruction

Magma Metalworks is offering workshops and private metalworking instruction for the individual, or with groups, such as family, friends, co-workers, or working with educational institutions. Instruction is focused on metalwork topics that can be catered to your interests, and may include basic metalworking, metal joint design, furniture, musical instruments, lighting, basic metal forming, and sculpture.

The studio is in a 3000 sq. ft. professional metalworking shop near the Beverly Depot commuter rail and there is plenty of parking. Instruction is primarily offered by Erica Moody, founder and principal of Magma Metalworks since 2001, and a professional metal fabricator for 17 years.

Custom Private or Group Instruction

Cost: Current flat rate for private instruction is 75/hr for shop time, with a 3 hour minimum. Fabricate with the family, colleagues, and friends, for the more in the group, the less expensive per person.

Intro to Metalwork (Full Day)
Meets for one day, 10-5, on the following Fridays: 1/27, 2/24, 3/23, 4/27

Cost: $150 each day
Material Fee: $20

This workshop is an introduction to the process of making things with metal. We will review hot and cold connections, bending, cutting and drilling, and welding and soldering. Welding techniques reviewed can include MIG, TIG, and oxy/acetylene. Class time can be spent questioning, exploring, and practicing techniques. Students can bring a project to work on or make a small vessel to take home. All skills welcome and no background is necessary. This can also be appropriate for past students that want to continue and use the shop as an open studio with consulting.

The workshop is taught by Erica Moody, founder and principal of Magma Metalworks since 2001, and a professional metal fabricator for 17 years.

Registration/Refund Policy for workshops:

Classes and workshops are filled on a first-come, first-served basis.

Payment in full is required to register for classes and workshops AND to reserve a space. Payment must be received 3 weeks prior to class to reserve space. Magma Metalworks accepts credit cards via PayPal, personal checks, and money orders. You can register online, or by mail. A $35 service fee is charged for all returned checks. Checks must be made out to Magma Metalworks, Inc.

For Students who withdraw 14 days or more before the start of a weekly class or workshop:

A $25 fee will be deducted from the refund if a student chooses to receive a Course Credit Certificate. Course credit certificates are transferable and expire one year from the issue date.

A $50 handling fee will be deducted from the refund if a student chooses to be reimbursed by check. Checks will be mailed within 30 days from the cancellation date.

Cancellations must be made in writing by email. Phone cancellations are not accepted.

For Students who withdraw within the 13 day period before the start of a weekly class or workshop:

Tuition and material fees will NOT be refunded as they have already been invested in the course.

Please Note: Tuition cannot be refunded once classes begin. Magma Metalworks does not issue refunds for classes or workshops missed by the student.

If it is necessary to cancel a meeting of any class or workshop due to inclement weather, instructor illness, or other emergency, Magma Metalworks will notify students. Weather-related cancellations are noted on the voicemail of our main telephone number, 617-686-0478. If we are unable to reschedule the missed day, we will issue a pro-rated tuition refund.

Magma Metalworks reserves the right to make changes in classes, workshops, schedules, instructors, and cancel a class or workshop due to insufficient enrollment. If a class is cancelled due to insufficient enrollment students will be notified one week in advance. Enrollment in a class is closed after its second meeting; enrollment after the first class is at the instructor's discretion.
